Can I tell you a secret? In home photo sessions are my favorite. Don’t get me wrong, I have a list of photo session locations I truly love in and around Washington, DC. However, there is something special about having your family photos done at home. Why? Your family will always be more at ease at home. In Home Maternity Photos
My goal for in home maternity photos is to document the story of your family at that moment in time. I focus on capturing images that showcase your family’s connection, feel authentic and raw, and that you can look back on in years to come and feel happily nostalgic.
What Kind of Setup is Needed for In Home Maternity Photos?
The most important thing to have for in home maternity photos is a couple of windows or doors in each room that get a good amount of light. In order to get the best result I will turn off overhead lights and lamps, and give you guidance on where to sit or stand.
When I arrive, one of the first things I will ask of you is for a quick tour of the spaces where you are thinking of using for photos. This allows me to assess light sources, think about how I will guide and prompt you in the different spaces to achieve a great final product. Oftentimes, I will also spot features of your home that I can incorporate for a unique perspective. For example, when I noticed the windows at this Hyattsville in home maternity session, I knew that in addition to photos inside, I would want to get some from outside looking in.
How to Get Ready
I send all of my in home maternity photo clients a detailed preparation guide on exactly how to prepare. The goal of that is to take away any uncertainty and allow you to focus on enjoying the experience.
High level, here are the things to think about:
- Clothing should be comfortable, well fitting, and look/feel like you. Avoid bright colors and large logos, but otherwise focus on what will make you feel great during the session.
- We’ll mostly be in your living room and kitchen, and may also take some photos in your master bedroom and nursery. With that in mind, just shift anything that you would not want to have in the photos. I can help you with this before we get started.
- If you have children, let them know that I will be coming over for some photos of your family. Feel free to show them a photo of me from my website so that I am a more familiar face when I ring the bell! If possible, give them a meal or snack right before the session. Also know that my approach is very laid back and we can take breaks when needed during the session.
- Nothing for you to do on this one, but just a reminder that I will be hunting for the best natural light in each setting – so I will be on the lookout for good windows, doors, skylights, etc., and will want to turn off other lights.
What to expect during your in home maternity session
I’ll arrive a few minutes before your session to meet you and your family, and have a walkthrough of your home. In home maternity sessions typically take up to one hour. That may vary based on factors like whether you have older children and what pace we will need to move at for them.
I will guide you through the session using a combination of light posing and prompting, in a way that allows you to know what to do while also helping us achieve authentic results so that your photos do not look posed.
